Eric Nelsen - Shorewood

  • We won the Woodland Conference (mostly a D1 conference) for the first time ever.  We did that with a deep line up (5 flights in top 2; all in top 4).

  • We also had two singles players in the top 8 at Individual State including a 3rd place finish that was our best in over 40 years.  We did all of this after losing six of our top 12 from last year. 1 Singles finished in 3rd place at Individual State.

  • Our program gets very few experienced tennis players so everything we do is about player development across the roster.  For example on this year’s team, only two of our 12 varsity players had significant experience before high school.  Three did not join the team until Sophomore year and four were absolute beginners as Freshmen.

  • Our focus is creating a love of tennis and a desire to compete.  If we can make it fun, more of our athletes will embrace off-season tennis.  This shows in our numbers as we generally have 30 - 40 girls out for tennis despite a school population of less than 600.

  • First trip to Team State in program history. As the #4 seed at the state tournament, won both matches at team state 5-2 win over Edgewood and 6-1 win over Altoona to win our first team state championship in school history.
